Broadreach's program design, philosophy and approach to experiential adventure are what make our trips so exceptional. Beyond having fun and making friends, we believe that a well designed adventure program can also provide incredible opportunities for learning, discovery and personal growth. With the proper staff and group dynamics, lessons learned while hiking in the rainforest, mastering scuba rescue techniques or at the helm under sail can be as meaningful, even more so, as those learned in the classroom at school.

Regardless of location or program focus, every aspect of our trips is designed to maximize educational opportunities and meet certain goals, which are reflected in our "Course Objectives". In addition to the "hard skills" learned on a trip (scuba, backcountry camping, ocean sailing or sea kayaking) participants learn other less tangible skills that will influence and benefit them long after their program is over.

Broadreach targets six major objectives for all of our trips.

1. Teamwork

Teamwork is required to make our programs successful. This objective includes learning about communication and social skills, conflict resolution, caring and compassion for others, living and working in a group and a responsibility to the team.

2. Leadership

Broadreachers learn about goal setting, time management, guiding group discussions and decision-making strategies as they rotate through leadership positions within the team.

3. Environmental Stewardship

Our staff promotes an understanding of global environmental issues, ecosystems and developmental pressures on the areas we visit, while creating a sense of responsibility to the environment.

4. Openness to Different Ideas, Beliefs and Cultures

Participants learn to appreciate diversity and different cultural norms, as well as tolerance for other individuals or views different than their own.

5. Sense of Self

Participants leave with a greater awareness of who they are, more confident and more aware of their limits, opportunities and abilities, comfortable with their own sense of integrity, honesty, personal responsibility and accountability.

6. Initiative

We encourage participants to step outside of their "comfort zone" in order to maximize the experience, try new things and create opportunities through their own initiative.
